Li Yangbing (exact birth and death years unknown), was born around the Kaiyuan era of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. He was a Tang dynasty literary figure and calligrapher. Courtesy name Shaowen, Han Chinese, from Qiao Commandery (present-day Bozhou, Anhui Province). He was Li Bai’s paternal uncle and wrote the preface for Li Bai’s Caotang Ji (Thatched Cottage Collection). Initially, he served as magistrate of Jinyun and Dangtu, later rising to Vice Director of the Imperial Academy and Academician of the Jixian Institute. Known as Shaojian, he had five brothers, all talented in literature and seal script calligraphy. He first studied under Li Si’s Yishan Stele and was renowned for his slender and vigorous style. Skilled in poetry and prose, especially proficient in small seal script, he claimed: “From Master Si to me, even Cao Xi and Cai Yong are not my match.” His seal script was described as “strong, sharp, and bold, spreading widely and collected, recognized by connoisseurs as the successor of Cangjie.” Later generations even called him “the unparalleled figure after Li Si through the ages.”
