Yuan Zi (749–818), courtesy name Deshen, was from Chen Commandery, Runan (present-day Runan, Henan) according to the Old Book of Tang, while the New Book of Tang records him as from Langshan, Caizhou. He was the brother-in-law of Yuan Jie. Recommended for official service, he was initially appointed as a trial manuscript examiner and later rose to the position of Chancellor under Emperor Xianzong, ending his career as Inspector of Hunan. The Old Book of Tang biography notes that Yuan Zi “excelled in seal and ancient script calligraphy, refined with an ancient style.” Ye Changchi’s Yushi states: “In Tang dynasty seal script, Li Yangbing is widely praised... Alongside him were Yuan Zi and Qu Lingwen, forming a trio, but their inscriptions are rare and little known today.” Few examples of Yuan Zi’s calligraphy survive. He once served as envoy to Nanzhao, and his inscription on cliff carvings still exists in Yanjin, Zhaotong, making it a precious relic.
