Description
Clerical script (Lìshū) is one of the “Eight Styles of Qin Script” and is a commonly seen, solemn style of Chinese calligraphy. Its characters appear slightly wide and flat, with long horizontal strokes and short vertical ones, forming a rectangular shape. The script emphasizes features such as the “silkworm head and wild goose tail” (蠶頭雁尾) and the “three-fold wave stroke” (一波三折). It is believed to have originated during the Qin dynasty, traditionally attributed to Cheng Miao, and reached its peak in the Eastern Han dynasty. In the calligraphy world, there's a well-known saying: “Han clerical, Tang regular” (漢隸唐楷), highlighting the prominence of clerical script during the Han dynasty.
Clerical transformation (隸變) refers to the evolution of Chinese characters from Small Seal Script (小篆) to Clerical Script, which took place around the Qin-Han period. This transformation marked a significant turning point in the development of Chinese writing. Before this change, Chinese characters followed the principles of the Liu Shu (Six Methods of Character Formation), but clerical script began to deviate from these rules and evolved with new structural forms. Most modern regular script (楷書) and running script (行書) styles closely resemble the shapes that emerged after this clerical transformation.
