Wang Xizhi (303–361), courtesy name Yishao, was originally from Langya Commandery, Linyi (present-day Shandong). He held the official title of Right General of the Army and was known as Wang Youjun. He was the nephew of Wang Dao and a renowned calligrapher of the Eastern Jin dynasty, often hailed as the “Sage of Calligraphy.” Wang Xizhi’s calligraphy was influenced by Lady Wei (Wei Shuo) and Zhong Yao. His family belonged to the orthodox Daoist lineage, and he was also recorded as a Daoist priest of the Zhengyi tradition, which influenced his use of talismans.

None of Wang Xizhi’s original works survive today; famous pieces like Preface to the Orchid Pavilion (蘭亭集序) are known through later copies and imitations. Wang Xizhi was highly curious and thoughtful from a young age. He began learning calligraphy at seven under the female calligrapher Wei Shuo.
