Li Yong (674–746), courtesy name Taihe, was from Xianning, Jiangxia (present-day Xianning, Hubei Province). He once served as the governor of Beihai and was thus known as Li Beihai. A prominent Tang dynasty calligrapher, Li Yong was a master of running script inscriptions, known for his grand and unrestrained style. The last emperor of Southern Tang remarked, “Li Yong captured the spirit of the Right General but lacked physical robustness.” The Xuanhe Shupu records: “Yong excelled in brush and ink; his fame in running and cursive script is well established. He initially studied the style of the Right General’s script, grasped its essence, then broke free from old habits, renewing his brush strength.” His surviving stele works include the Lushan Temple Stele and the Li Sixun Stele.
