Regular Script (Kaishu): Also known as modern clerical script, standard script, or formal script, Kaishu is the most common handwritten style in Chinese calligraphy. It is traditionally attributed to Wang Cizhong during the reign of Emperor Zhang of Han, who developed the regular script method based on the Han clerical script. Kaishu is a variant of clerical script, characterized by more upright and square-shaped characters, eliminating the hooked strokes and "silkworm head and swallow tail" brush techniques of clerical script, and avoiding flattened shapes and structures that do not conform to the traditional six principles of Chinese character formation. Today, the style and aesthetic of Kaishu remain the primary standard reference for handwritten Chinese characters.
