Yu Shinan (558–July 11, 638), courtesy name Boshi, was a Han Chinese from Yuyao, Yuezhou (present-day Minghechang, Guanhaiwei Town, Cixi City, Zhejiang Province). He was a calligrapher, writer, poet, and politician during the Northern and Southern Dynasties through the Sui and Tang periods. He was one of the 24 meritorious officials commemorated at Lingyan Pavilion. Son of Yu Li, Crown Prince’s attendant of the Chen dynasty, and younger brother of Yu Shiji, an official of the Sui dynasty. Yu Shinan was skilled in calligraphy and, along with Ouyang Xun, Chu Suiliang, and Xue Ji, was known as one of the “Four Great Masters of Early Tang.” Japanese scholars refer to Ouyang Xun, Chu Suiliang, and Yu Shinan as the “Three Great Masters of Early Tang.” He compiled the Beitang Shuchao, considered one of the four major classified books of the Tang dynasty and one of the earliest extant categorized encyclopedias in China. His poetry and prose collection originally comprised 30 volumes, but it is now incomplete. During the Republic of China, Zhang Shouyong compiled the Collected Works of Yu Biji in four volumes.
