Sun Guoting (646–691), given name Qianli, commonly known by his courtesy name, was from Fuyang, Hangzhou (present-day Zhejiang Province). He was a renowned calligrapher of the Tang dynasty, skilled in regular (kaishu) and running script (xingshu), with exceptional mastery in cursive script (caoshu). Building on a deep understanding of the calligraphic essence of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Sun Guoting developed his own innovations and distinctive style. His brushwork is firm and powerful, achieving a level of mastery often described as reaching the pinnacle of refinement.
