Wen Zhengming (November 28, 1470 – March 28, 1559), originally named Bi (or Bi), courtesy name Zhengming. From the age of 42, he used his courtesy name as his common name and later changed it to Zhengzhong. His ancestors were from Hengshan, so he was also known as "Hengshan Jushi" (Hengshan Resident) and commonly referred to as "Wen Hengshan." He was a Han Chinese from Changzhou (present-day Suzhou, Jiangsu Province). Wen Zhengming was a renowned Ming dynasty painter, calligrapher, and literary figure. His skills spanned poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting—mastering all four arts and thus considered a "quadruple genius." Along with Shen Zhou, he founded the "Wu School," and together with Shen Zhou, Tang Bohu, and Qiu Ying, he is known as one of the "Four Masters of Ming" ("Wu Men Four Masters"). In poetry, he followed the styles of Bai Juyi and Su Shi; he studied literature under Wu Kuan, calligraphy under Li Yingzhen, and painting under Shen Zhou. In poetry and prose, he is counted among the "Four Talents of Wu" along with Zhu Yunming, Tang Yin, and Xu Zhenqing.
