Ouyang Tong (625–691) was a Tang dynasty official and calligrapher. Courtesy name Tongshi, he was Han Chinese from Linxiang, Tanzhou (present-day Changsha, Hunan Province). He was the son of Ouyang Xun. Orphaned early, his mother Xu taught him calligraphy based on his father’s style. Initially appointed as a Lang at the Lantai (Orchid Pavilion) office, during the Yifeng era he rose through ranks to become Zhongshu Sheren (a mid-level official in the Secretariat), was titled Duke of Bohai, and later served as Minister of Rites and Deputy Chancellor. In the second year of the Tianyou reign, he was Prime Minister but was killed due to his opposition to the crown prince Wu Chengsi.
He excelled in regular script (kaishu), mastering and surpassing his father’s style with a sharper, more vigorous approach. Father and son were renowned together, known as the “Big and Little Ouyang.”
